To Express the Glory of Being Alone

Feeling a little stuck on what to write today? We have a freewriting prompt to stir you out of your brainfunk. For me, the best cure to an unproductive writing day is a little bit of quiet...but when that's not possible, surreal images like these are often the best we can do.

Which one of these scenes inspires you the most? Of all of these places, where is the place you'd most like to be? If these places aren't your ideal piece of solitude, what is?

Whether you would choose one of the above landscapes as your ideal quiet getaway, you already have the perfect place in mind, or you build one completely from scratch in your head, freewrite for at least ten minutes on the following things:

1. Do you welcome, or shy from, solitude?
2. What intangible things do you keep with you when you are alone?
3. What sounds come to you in silence?
4. Do your portrayals of loneliness and solitude agree or disagree with the quote below?

Once you're finished, take a few quiet moments to let your writing simmer, and then go back and work your freewriting into a poem. Happy writing, friends!

As always, if you love the result, or you simply want to talk more about the thoughts that came up with this prompt, we'd love to hear from you. Send us an email or leave a comment below.

And no, we didn't write this post because Valentine's Day is tomorrow, in case you were wondering.
