Stained Glass in the Windy City: Unexpected Inspiration

Good morning! If you've been following along with our lovely little blog, you may remember the time your editors took a trip to Chicago for a day of writing and adventure (and also a lot of slogging through the snow). We wrote at the Art Institute, explored a snow-sculpting contest, and got free granola bars (they were really good, we still think about them sometimes). But one of my favorite parts of our day in the Windy City was our stop at the stained glass gallery.

The Richard H. Driehaus Gallery of Stained Glass lives at Chicago's good ol' Navy Pier, and in my opinion, it's one of the best reasons to swing through Navy Pier. It's a quiet but stunning little pocket of the Pier, and if you have even a few minutes to spare, I'd highly recommend taking a stop inside. The gallery has a mix of secular and sacred stained glass windows, all of which are equally beautiful. Here are a few of my favorites:

What does stained glass have to do with poetry, you may ask? These gorgeous scenes are the perfect inspiration for writing: why else would we have made a stop on our writing adventure?

Your poetry prompt for today is quite simple: gaze at the stained glass windows we've included in this post and freewrite for ten minutes. Look especially at the windows that include people: what's their story? (The window with the couple is my favorite, can you tell?)

Until next time!
